Outdoor Circuit Breaker is a key switching device used in outdoor high-voltage power systems. Its main function is to connect or disconnect circuits during normal operation and quickly cut off current in case of faults (such as short circuits, overloads), thereby controlling power flow and protecting equipment like lines and transformers. Compared with indoor circuit breakers, its design must focus on adapting to complex outdoor environments (such as extreme temperatures, rain, snow, sand, ultraviolet rays, etc.), so it has higher requirements for insulation, protection, and weather resistance.
Core Working Principle
The core of an outdoor circuit breaker is the arc-extinguishing and insulation system, which achieves arc extinguishment and circuit isolation through specific media (such as SF₆ gas, vacuum, oil, etc.):
When the circuit breaker opens, the separation of moving and static contacts generates an arc. The arc-extinguishing medium (such as the strong electronegativity of SF₆, the low ionization of vacuum) will quickly absorb arc energy to extinguish the arc;
At the same time, the insulation system (including air gaps, insulating pillars, bushings, etc.) must maintain sufficient insulation strength in outdoor environments to prevent flashover between contacts or to the ground.
Main Types and Structures
According to the arc-extinguishing medium, common types of outdoor circuit breakers include:
SF₆ outdoor circuit breakers: Using SF₆ gas as the arc-extinguishing and insulation medium, they feature high arc-extinguishing efficiency and compact size, suitable for high-voltage (110kV and above) scenarios. However, attention must be paid to the control of SF₆'s greenhouse effect;
Outdoor vacuum circuit breakers: Utilizing vacuum for arc extinguishing, they are environmentally friendly without greenhouse gases and require little maintenance, mostly used in medium and high-voltage (10kV-35kV) outdoor power distribution (such as pole-mounted switches);
